Finding the Right Place to Begin
Progress starts with an appropriate starting point.
Beginning with work that is too difficult can reinforce gaps and affect confidence. Starting too far back, however, may provide too little challenge. Tony therefore assesses each child individually rather than assuming that their school year alone determines the work they need.

What Happens During the Free Assessment?
Your child completes a short diagnostic test while Tony observes how they approach the work. An assessment takes approximately 20 minutes per subject, and parents are present.
The process is straightforward:
- Your child completes a short diagnostic Maths and/or English assessment
- Tony observes them as they work
- Their answers and approach are considered together
- Strengths and potential gaps in understanding are identified
- Tony uses the findings to determine an appropriate starting point
- Parents receive a verbal report explaining the findings
The purpose is not to put your child under unnecessary pressure. It is to understand where they are now so that any programme that follows begins from an informed starting point.
Tony Looks Beyond Right & Wrong Answers
A completed test can show Tony which questions a child answered correctly. Observation can reveal something equally important: how they reached those answers.
For example, Tony regularly sees children who still use their fingers for addition and subtraction. They may eventually reach the correct answer, but their method can indicate that an important mathematical skill is not yet sufficiently secure for the more complex work that builds upon it.
In English, Tony has encountered children who rely heavily on phonics and need to sound out words before recognising them. That can work with shorter words but become increasingly difficult as vocabulary and texts grow more complex.
By watching a child work, Tony can notice hesitation, strategies and areas of dependence that a final score alone may not fully explain.
Understanding How Your Child Thinks
Assessment at Zenshin is closely connected to Tony’s wider teaching philosophy.
Tony has worked in education since 1973, and his approach places considerable importance on observation before intervention. Rather than immediately telling a child what to do when they encounter difficulty, he gives them time to think and uses carefully chosen questions to guide them towards understanding.
This matters during an assessment too. Tony is interested not simply in whether a child knows an answer, but in the understanding and learning habits behind it.
That insight helps him plan work that develops academic skills while gradually encouraging greater confidence, concentration and independence.
What Happens After the Assessment?
Parents receive a verbal report following the assessment. Tony explains what he has observed, discusses the results and recommends where your child should begin if they join the programme.
The starting point is based on the assessment rather than simply matching work to the child’s age.
Assessment also continues once learning begins. Students progress through the Zenshin programme in small steps, with an assessment at the end of each level. This helps Tony establish whether the child is ready to move forward or whether further practice would strengthen their understanding first.
In this way, assessment is not simply something that happens before tuition. It forms part of an ongoing cycle of learning, checking understanding and progressing when ready.
Is an Assessment Suitable for My Child?
Students attend classes in a learning centre where everyone works independently at a level that is appropriate for them.
