Meet Tony Heywood, an Experienced English & Maths Tutor in Taunton
When your child needs support with Maths or English, finding the right person matters just as much as finding the right programme. As an experienced English & Maths tutor, Tony Heywood believes tuition should do more than help children reach the next correct answer. Through Zenshin Educational, he helps Years 1 to 8 students strengthen their understanding while learning how to think, solve problems and become increasingly independent.
Where Tony’s Approach to Education Began
Tony began teaching Maths in secondary schools in 1973, the same year the school leaving age was raised from 15 to 16. His first year brought him face-to-face with young people who had already become disengaged from education, leading him to question how so many children could reach secondary school with significant gaps in their learning.
Tony came to believe that many of these difficulties had begun much earlier. That experience helped shape a question that would remain important throughout his career: how can children build secure foundations before gaps in understanding become bigger barriers to learning?
His educational career has since included teaching in state secondary schools, independent grammar schools, at Middlesex University and in private tuition. He also holds a BA (Hons) in Social Science.

More Than 50 Years of Understanding How Children Learn
Over those years, Tony has had the opportunity to observe not only what children learn, but how they learn. That distinction has become central to his approach as an English & Maths tutor.
A child who can only complete a task when an adult explains every step may arrive at the correct answer, but they have not necessarily developed the confidence or understanding to tackle the next problem alone.
Tony believes good tuition should gradually make children less dependent on the person teaching them, not more.
Why Tony Created Zenshin Educational
Zenshin Educational grew from Tony’s desire to develop his own structured Maths and English programmes around a principle he considers fundamental: children should learn how to learn for themselves.
The name reflects that philosophy. Zenshin means “progress” or “moving forward”, but for Tony it represents more than simply moving from one level to another. It describes purposeful progress: taking manageable steps, building on skills that have already been mastered and developing securely before moving to the next stage.
Rather than expecting a child to work at a particular level simply because of their age or school year, Tony first looks at what they genuinely understand. Learning gaps can then be addressed before the child moves forwards.
This creates a clear progression:
- Identify gaps in understanding
- Establish an appropriate starting point
- Develop skills through manageable steps
- Check understanding before progressing
- Build confidence through achievement
- Encourage greater independence over time

Why Tony Does Not Simply Give Children the Answer
One of the clearest differences in Tony’s approach is what happens when a child gets stuck.
His first response is not necessarily to tell them what to do.
Tony observes, gives the student time to think and, where guidance is needed, uses carefully chosen questions or examples to help them work out the process for themselves.
There is an important reason for this. Discovering a solution independently gives a child something that being handed an answer cannot: the experience of knowing they worked it out themselves.
Repeated over time, those moments can help children become more willing to attempt unfamiliar problems, think carefully about what they already know and trust their own ability.
Sometimes Helping Less Can Teach a Child More
It is natural for parents to want to help when their child is struggling. However, Tony believes there is an important difference between supporting a child’s thinking and doing the thinking for them.
Providing the answer may solve the immediate problem, but asking the right question can help a child discover how to solve similar problems independently in future.
That might mean allowing a little more thinking time or asking a child what they notice about an example, what they already understand or which part of the problem they could attempt first.
This is not about leaving children to struggle without support. Tony guides students when they need it. The aim is to provide enough guidance to move their thinking forwards without removing the opportunity to think.

Confidence Is Built Through What Children Achieve for Themselves
For Tony, confidence is not something that can simply be talked into a child.
It develops through achievement.
Students work at a level appropriate to their current understanding and progress through the Zenshin programmes in small steps. Daily work gives them regular opportunities to practise, while positive feedback recognises what they have achieved.
Progress is checked at the end of each learning level. If a student is ready, they move forwards. If an area needs further practice, they spend more time strengthening it first.
Because these low-stress assessments form a regular part of the learning process, Tony also aims to make checking progress feel familiar rather than something children only encounter in high-pressure situations.
This combination of appropriate challenge, practice and independent discovery is designed to help children experience success without making learning unnecessarily overwhelming.
Preparing Children for More Independent Learning

The ability to learn independently becomes increasingly important as children approach secondary school.
Students are expected to concentrate for longer, organise their work, apply previous knowledge to unfamiliar problems and take greater responsibility for their own learning.
That is why Tony does not view independence as something separate from Maths and English tuition. It is part of the purpose of the programme.
Students at Zenshin work independently within a structured classroom environment while Tony observes their progress and provides guidance when needed. Alongside subject knowledge, this gives children opportunities to develop focus, concentration, problem-solving and self-discipline.
Tony does not assume that two children in the same school year should begin in the same place.
Every student therefore starts with a free diagnostic assessment. Tony considers both the results and how the child approaches the work, helping him identify strengths, possible learning gaps and an appropriate starting point.
Parents are present and receive verbal feedback afterwards, so they can understand what Tony has observed and why a particular starting point may be recommended.
Starting With the Child, Not an Assumption
Maths & English Tuition for Years 1 to 8
Zenshin Educational provides structured Maths and English programmes for children from Years 1 to 8.
Students attend Zenshin classes in Taunton and Monkton Heathfield, with families also travelling from Bridgwater, Wellington and surrounding areas.
Whether a child needs to strengthen important foundations, regain confidence or work at a level that provides greater challenge, Tony’s starting point remains the same: understand the individual child first, then help them move forward at an appropriate pace.
